I’ve been spending a lot of free time working on my iPhone game lately and I’m happy to say that I’m making slow but (somewhat) steady progress. I have to admit though, since I already had a decent background in Mac OS X programming prior to my foray into iPhone dev’ing, the hurdles working with the iPhone SDK haven’t been too bad. Plus, I used some of my NSDocument-based app skills to whip up a Mac graphical texture/polygon editor for the physics system I’m using (with full undo/redo ‘n everything). Tuesday night Judy and I met with Rodney to pick up the origami paper we ordered from SF. We decided to meet closer to the southbay and ended up at my brother’s favorite restaurant in San Mateo: Sushi Sam’s. Of course, being Sushi Sam’s neophytes, we end up ordering dinner entrées AND the chef’s special by mistake. Rodney was certainly more prudent as he forewent the entrée. Overeating aside the food and sushi were both pretty good. We should probably head back to Sushi Sam’s in the future.
So with my lack of posting from my helio and my desire to program my phone, I finally broke down and got an iPhone 3g. While the iPhone camera is markedly worse than the Fin camera, the Internet capabilities and the available sdk made this choice pretty easy for me. I’ve already dug in to the sdk and have built a couple test apps to get my hands dirty. As a hobbiest Mac OS X developer, transitioning to iPhone OS was pretty easy. The hardest part for me has been wrestling with the new UIKit classes and the changes to Interface Builder since I last did Mac development. All in all, I’m pretty happy with my overly expensive switch. I’ll probably be playing less TF2 as a result.
Memorial Day weekend was Fanime! And I can happily say that my secret project with Andrew was a big success. Yes, I created a muppet version of Kankuro’s combat puppet Karasu! (complete with glowing chakra!) Of course, Andrew took on the gutsy task of actually donning the Kankuro costume and makeup, but I’m still rather jazzed that my muppet creation was part of such an excellent cosplay.
Andrew came up with the Muppet Karasu idea, bought the materials, and eventually came to me because Judy had recently bought a sewing machine. Being the perfectionist I am, I proceeded to hijack his project and ended up designing and constructing the majority of the muppet. From scratch! Honestly, I’m quite proud that it turned out even better than my dog-eating-head hat.
Check out my flickr set for more photos of the construction of Muppet Karasu.
